How old are we really?

As I turn another year older, I remember a story I read years ago written by a woman toward the end of her life in which she felt not like an old woman, but like all the ages she had been. Of course she felt the physical limitations which accompanied her age, but she was also still a 16-year-old girl in love for the first time and a 20-something new bride. I’m not sure how old I feel today. I felt 6 when I had ice cream for dessert tonight. Sometimes I still feel like that insecure 13-year-old in middle school. And in a few weeks I’m going to be 25 and a new mother again – with all those hopes and fears -when my son leaves home for the fall semester. Maybe I’m finally comfortable being a grown up, but I don’t think I’ll ever get used to my kids growing up.

I think today, at least for today, I’ll be the 45 years old I am.  Happy ‘my birthday’ Mom and Dad, thanks for everything!
