Does God have a sense of humor?

I’ve long thought so, and Suzy at Share the Spiritual reminded me of that thought with her most recent post. Laughter is one of life’s mysteries, one of those things without a clear purpose. Nature is ruthlessly efficient, generally selecting out that which is inefficient, which serves no purpose. So why do we laugh? Laughter certainly greases social relationships, a clear advantage. But why does it feel so good? Why does it ease stress in difficult or even tragic times? Why does it feel like it has healing powers? I have always set a personal goal to laugh until I cry at least once a month. I don’t always achieve my goal since that’s a nearly impossible thing to plan for, but I always feel better, even healthier, when I do. And I would pay to hear my youngest daughter’s belly laugh. Somehow laughter is more than just social’s good for us. I am convinced it is a gift to us from God, given to us to ease our lives’ difficulties a bit. I just bet God has one wicked sense of humor…

“Humor is just another defense against the universe.”  –Peter Ustinov

“There is hope for the future because God has a sense of humor and we are funny to God.”  –Bill Cosby
